Paul Pogba has deleted an eyebrow-raising social media post that was published moments after news Manchester United had sacked manager Jose Mourinho.
Pogba and Mourinho have a well documented history of incidents and disagreements, including sideline spats and training ground confrontations, which culminated in the France World Cup winner being benched for United’s crucial match away to Liverpool on the weekend.
The club released a statement shortly before 10am GMT on Tuesday confirming the Portugese manager had been fired following a string of poor performances that sees the Red Devils 19 points adrift of league-leaders Liverpool.
Shortly after the news broke, Pogba posted an image on Instagram and Twitter pulling a face at the camera and adding ‘Caption this!’ before tagging Manchester United’s official account.
The post was deleted shortly after, but not before social media went into overdrive speculating on the motivation behind the post, with many taking screenshots of the picture before it was taken down.
Pogba’s image attracted north of 13,000 likes in the first minute it was posted, with comments ranging from calling the midfielder ‘savage’ and saying his ‘Christmas wish had come true’ while others were less impressed with the timing with some even labelling the 25-year-old a ‘disgrace’.
Former midfielder Michael Carrick is expected to take over from Mourinho on a caretaker basis while Manchester United search for a permanent manager.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino and former PSG and France manager Laurent Blanc have been early names touted for the vacancy.
